Calories In, Calories Out

Weight loss and weight gain are based on one simple principle; calories burned versus calories consumed, or in other words: calories in vs. calories out. If you consume more calories per day than your body uses, than you will gain weight. Conversely, if you consume less calories per day than you use, or burn more calories than you take in, you will lose weight.

Daily Caloric Needs

Daily Caloric Intake is the number of calories needed to be consumed during the course of a day in order to maintain one's current weight.

Your body requires a certain amount of calories everyday just to survive. This is called your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and is a key component in figuring out the number of calories you should consume each day based on your personal fitness goals.

In addition to your BMR, your body also burns additional calories as you carry out basic day-to-day activities such as walking, eating, shopping and working. All of these calories added together equal your daily caloric needs.

People generally burn approximately 500 calories per day in addition to their BMR just living their daily lives, so you add 500 calories to your BMR to find your Daily Caloric Intake:

Daily Caloric Intake= BMR+500

On workout days you will need to find out the amount of calories you expend during your workout routines and add that to the above formula to find your Daily Caloric Intake.

You will then need to adjust your daily caloric needs based on your personal goals. Find out your daily calorie needs with our Calorie Calculator.
